Before starting our operations, The Good Tree Ghana set out to gain insights into the needs and perceptions of girls and young women living in Teshie. The study focused on how girls perceived themselves as individuals and as a part of society. It also covered their values on creativity as well as sexual and reproductive health.
The findings of the study offered key insights into areas that The Good Tree can focus on in order to empower girls in Teshie. The girls perceive creativity and play as important to their well-being, and so we endeavour to integrate these elements into our programs and activities. Conversations on feminist ideologies and perspectives can also provide the girls with a new lens through which to view their community and circumstances.
Providing leadership avenues and healthy competition can also boost self-pride and respect. Platforming the creative and leadership prowess of girls to their community can be an avenue for recognition that can further boost self-regard. It is also pertinent to foster a holistic approach towards discussing and providing knowledge and resources on reproductive health.
